Many years ago there was an altercation between a couple of working-class characters in a patronising Royal Court play as to whether a penguin was a book or a biscuit. Following the worldwide success of documentary La marche de l'empereur, this British documentary filmed on South Georgia will settle that dispute once and for all. It's about a slightly smaller form of penguin than the subject of the French film, and it feeds us less of the anthropomorphism as well as doing nothing to encourage believers in intelligent design. David Attenborough's authoritative narration is preferable to the sonorous commentary read by Morgan Freeman in the English version of the French picture.
